You Don't Have To Accept Thinning Hair

Hair density and hair thickness slowly diminishes as women age. However, thickness and density are also inherited traits. Some women are predisposed to premature hair loss, so while one woman may begin thinning at 50, another may start at 30.

Many medical conditions can also provoke hair loss. Though doctors don't know all the causes, approximately 2.5 million men, women and children in the US will experience one of three types of alopecia.

Alopecia Aretrata

The most common reason for premature hair loss is alopecia areata. This causes circular patches of hair loss on the scalp. Alopecia is fairly common and fortunately most cases are temporary. If you're suffering from this kind of hair loss, a wig may be a temporary solution while your hair grows back.

Cancer Related Alopecia

Chemotherapy causes cancer patients to shed hair and nails during treatment. This is because Chemotherapy works by destroying all of the cells in an area, including both cancer cells and the cells of the patient. This is why chemotherapy is so draining for the person undergoing treatment.

Chemo related hair loss usually results in sudden and large amounts of hair loss. No new hair grows during the treatment phase.

It may take up to six months for hair to regrow, and the hair that regrows is often permanently finer and thinner than it was before.

Lifestyle Related Alopecia

Poor diet, high stress, smoking, drinking, and even lack of sleep can cause premature hair loss. In the cases of poor diet, pregnancy, and lack of sleep, the balding is usually reversible. However, drinking, stress, and smoking related hair loss may be permanent.
